Wynton Marsalis: Selections from String Quartet No.1 “At the Octoroon Balls”

Bedřich Smetana: String Quartet No. 1 in E minor “From My Life"

Our first concert with this California-based ensemble. “The Calidore Quartet, founded ten years ago at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, balanced the technical demands and humane adventures of these masterpieces… more completely than any contemporary string quartet I have heard…” (New York Arts)

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Trio élégiaque No.1 in G minor, in one movement

This concert marks the end to our felicitous 43-year relationship with this much-loved ensemble. We have been enthralled by their musical presence in thirty-four outstanding concerts since 1979. Their finale will include founding member Eric Wilson joining the Quartet to perform Schubert’s sublime cello quintet. “The Emerson performances represented an extraordinary fusion of experience and authority with audacity and freshness.”(The Boston Globe)

Another returning ensemble, this “super-trio” is an audience favourite. “…the stuff of legend. Johannes Brahms: String Quartet in A minor, Opus 51, No.2

Our first concert with this Spanish ensemble. “Virile, clean, surging with expression, the Cuarteto Casals’ sound is arresting… playing of extreme technical perfection yet with life bursting from every note. I left in seventh heaven.” (The Times, UK)
